Fuel

Fuel tankering across the Balkans: when the maths actually works

Carrying fuel costs fuel. Across short Balkan sectors the price spread is often real enough to justify it — and often not. The difference is arithmetic.

Tankering is one of the few decisions in trip planning that reduces cleanly to a number. You are trading the price difference per tonne against the cost of carrying the weight. Everything else is detail.

The shape of the calculation

Carrying extra fuel burns roughly three to five percent of the tankered quantity per hour of flight, depending on type and level. On a one-hour sector, carrying a tonne costs you something like thirty to fifty kilos. If the destination price exceeds the departure price by more than that proportion, tankering pays.

  • Price differential per tonne, inclusive of into-plane fees and taxes at both ends
  • Sector length and the resulting carriage burn
  • Any weight-based landing or navigation charges at destination
  • Whether the extra weight pushes you into a higher charging band, or off a payload

Where it works in this region

Short Balkan sectors are a good candidate precisely because they are short — carriage burn is small. The spread between a well-supplied hub and a regional field with a single supplier can be substantial, and on a rotation that returns to the hub the same day, tankering the round trip is often the obvious call.

Where it does not

It stops working when the aircraft is payload-limited, when the destination charges by weight in a way that eats the saving, or when the departure station's into-plane fee is quietly larger than the fuel price advantage. It also stops working when the spread you were quoted is three weeks old.

We price both ends before every uplift on request, and will tell you when the answer is not to tanker. That is usually the more valuable version of the advice.
